Key Stage 4 History

At the end of Year 9 pupils may choose History as one of their Option subjects.

In Years 10 and 11 the syllabus followed is the OCR examination ‘British ,Social and Economic History’.

Reasons for choosing History

1.  You are good at it and enjoy the subject.

2. To help in a chosen career. Many colleges and employers insist on a certain number of good grades (C or above) . Many careers also value History and recommend it as a qualification.

3. To develop knowledge and skills. The ability to form rational opinions, set out balanced arguments, undertake research, analyse source material, detect bias, develop the ability to think for yourself and clearly express your ideas on paper.

Components of the GCSE History Course

The course involves a study of a number of units relating to British Social &Economic History 1750-the present day.  These are examined as follows:

Paper 1   45%

Test the following units.

a) Medicine, Surgery & health. 1750-2000.

b) Changes in Agriculture, Industry & Transport. 1750-1850.

Paper 2   30%

Tests pupil’s ability to use written and picture source material on the subject of: Public Health & Housing.

Paper 3   25%

Coursework on ‘The Changing role of Women’

a) Detailed account (1500 words) of the effects of The First World war 1914-18 upon the role & status of women in Britain.

b) Four shorter exercises (total 1500 words) on the impact of a local ‘militant’ Suffragette woman and her attempts to secure the vote.
