Key Stage 3
Duration - 2 x 1
hour lessons
During key stage 3 pupils become more expert in their
skills and techniques, and how to apply them in different activities.
They start to understand what makes a performance effective and how to
apply these principles to their own and others'.
They learn to take the initiative and make decisions for themselves
about what to do to improve performance. They start to identify
the types of activity they prefer to be involved with, and to take a
variety of roles such as leader and official.
Breadth of study
During the key stage, pupils should be taught the knowledge, skills
and understanding through four areas of activity. These should
include:
a) games activities
and three of the following, at least one of which must be dance or
gymnastic activities:
b) dance activities
c) gymnastic activities
d) swimming activities and water safety
e) athletic activities
f) outdoor and adventurous activities.
Knowledge, skills and understanding
Teaching should ensure that, when evaluating and improving
performance, connections are made between developing, selecting and
applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas, and fitness and health
as detailed below.
1. Acquiring and developing skills.
2. Selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional
ideas.
3. Evaluating and improving performance.
4. Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health.
