GCSE Drama is offered as a separate course. We will be following the GSCE Drama syllabus offered by AQA. The course is mostly practical, although the element of written work is completed in both controlled assessments and a written examination paper.
Pupils will study a range of scripted pieces from a variety of playwrights and times including live theatre. They will explore plot structure, style, staging, set design, direction, dramatic impact and audience interpretation.
Script writing will be fully explored including layout, conventions and structure. Alongside this pupils will be involved in devising their own pieces, scripted or improvised, for performance and evaluation purposes. In addition they may also be involved with aspects of sound and lighting of productions. Furthermore the marketing and promotion of performances needs to be considered when exploring the success of a production.
Skills and explorative strategies include:
- tableaus
- thought tunnels
- narration
- hot seating
- role play
- forum theatre
Staging and performance aspects include:
- costume/make up
- sound and lighting
- space
- setting
- movement
- voice
- stage management
- set design
The two controlled assessment pieces involve a series of practical activities based around a playscript and other stimulus materials. These are accompanied by a written account of the practical work and evaluation of performance.
